We’re pleased to reveal the winning design of our ‘Square’ Camden High Street competition in collaboration with Camden Council. The installation by Edgy Collective and LINDA titled ‘subSTRATUM’ is a meanwhile civic square, of which will be unveiled at a public launch event on October 30th.
Comissioned from a design competition open to emerging artists, an expert panel of judges, including local leaders and built environment professionals, selected Edgy Collective and LINDA for a proposal that captures the spirit of Camden and transforms the high street into a vibrant, inclusive, and pedestrian-friendly space. The design responds directly to Camden’s public consultation findings and local priorities, introducing more inclusive seating and greenery along the street.
The winning design is being installed as part of an 18-month pedestrianisation trial, during which a section of Camden High Street is closed to motor vehicles. The project provides an opportunity to test and learn from temporary public realm improvements, helping Camden Council shape a potential future permanent scheme.
Launch Event
Camden subSTRATUM on Camden High Street will come alive with a celebration of Camden’s global community through four flagship seasonal events over the next year. The first takes place on Thursday 30 October, from 2–3pm. Located at 198 Camden High Street, NW1 BQP, the public event is free and open to all. This is a fantastic opportunity to be among the first to explore the new pop-up civic square, where community and nature meet. Camden High Street Cultural Programme
The trial pedestrianisation is supported by a wider year-long cultural programme run by Camden Council. The goal of the programme is to expand cultural activities into the street, and bring together Camden’s diverse communities to celebrate what makes Camden Town both a local and a global neighbourhood. The trial began on 5 May 2025 with a launch event, and will continue until April 2026 of which more information can be found here.
Looking Ahead
Unveiled on 30 October, Camden subSTRATUM will stay in place until Autumn 2026 for the remainder of the pedestrianisation trial. Local gardeners will maintain the new planters, ensuring the space remains vibrant and welcoming all year round. Camden Council will continue to gather data from the trial to assess its impact and guide positive long-term change. More information on the trial and how to share your views can be found here.
