Built in 1855, the Royal Victoria Dock was London’s largest, and first, steamship dock.
Now, it’s homes to Excel London, the IFS Cable Car, open water swimming, and the DLR.
In this family focused workshop, HTA Design and Excel London invite children of all ages to explore the dockland’s history.
Who worked here? What machines were built here? What goods came in on the ships?
Children will have the chance to build their own machines, products, and ships, delving into what it meant to belong to the dockland community that worked here for generations.

By public transport Travel to Custom House station (DLR or Elizabeth line). Exit the station and follow signs for Excel London – South Entrance (this is the closest entrance). Enter ExCeL via the South Entrance and continue straight into the building. Follow internal signage for South Gallery. South Gallery Rooms 3–4 are clearly signposted within the South Gallery area. On arrival Keep the waterfront behind you as you enter. The South Gallery is on the upper level, accessible by lifts and stairs. Event staff or reception desks can also direct you if needed.
