St Mary’s Church, a Grade II listed building by W and H.W. Inwood, marks its bicentenary in 2026 following a critical phase of conservation supported by Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Capital Fund.

This exhibition invites visitors to explore the church’s past, present and future — from its rich social history to the emergency repairs currently underway, and its ambition to become a net zero place of worship. Through this lens, the event reflects this year’s theme of Belonging by gathering and sharing stories, photographs and memories from local people, culminating in a growing community archive.

On display will be historical interpretation boards (installed either within the church or along the street frontage), alongside architects’ drawings and plans illustrating the conservation works and future proposals. A dedicated family history corner will provide space for visitors to engage with and contribute to the evolving story of St Mary’s.

The project highlights collaboration between the church, Historic England and delivery partners, aligning with the New London Agenda through partnership-led regeneration and a long-term vision for environmental and economic sustainability.

Open to local residents, heritage enthusiasts and those interested in conservation and community-led futures, the exhibition offers a chance to reflect on the role of historic buildings in shaping collective identity — and how they can adapt to serve future generations.
