Chrisp Street
Located in the heart of Poplar, Chrisp Street makes its debut as an LFA Neighbourhood to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Festival of Britain. Chrisp Street Market, which is known to be the UK’s first purpose-built pedestrian shopping centre, was rebuilt from scratch in 1951 for the Festival of Britain and is a real historic cornerstone of London’s East End. It was a model for ‘Festival-style’ architecture, influencing urban design across Britain.
Today, Chrisp Street is home to over 150 traders, including its landmark Grade II listed Clock Tower, some of the best pie & mash you can get in the East End, iconic street art, and its infamous market with merchants selling everything from clothing to fruit and veg. The Chrisp Street community is a melting pot of different cultures and is the embodiment of the Festival’s theme this year – ‘Belonging’.
Together with Poplar HARCA, the local housing association, and the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, Chrisp Street will be undergoing a redevelopment to create a new vision for Chrisp Street – one that puts homes, local businesses, and community life at its heart, delivering a comprehensive, residential-led mixed-use scheme. Telford Living, the developer behind the scheme, is working closely with the community, local councillors, and the wider stakeholders to ensure needs are met and that the future of Chrisp Street is something to be proud of.

Becoming a Festival Neighbourhood in this years’ London Festival of Architecture seems to be the perfect fit as we celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Festival of Britain, an event that was of extreme significance to Chrisp Street and the area. As a diverse, culturally-rich community, we are proud to see Chrisp Street participate to showcase how special this historically significant area of East End London is to the wider UK population.
