The pavilion will be situated on our New Cavendish Campus in a central location surrounded by modernist buildings. It is based on an open-source prototype developed by a student who centred their work on the idea of user autonomy, reflecting the belief that communities should have ownership over the spaces and infrastructure they use.
Designed for easy assembly by two adults, the pavilion gives users the freedom to build it as a pavilion or an internal partition. Through its simple structural system, it highlights user autonomy and demonstrates how open-source design can support accessible, collaborative, and knowledge-driven construction. Although the concept originates from a single student, the wider cohort will be invited to participate in the making process, and it will be one of the course's first public pavilions. The pavilion is open to the public 24/7 and a displaced board within communicates the underlying concept.
