Beyond the Bridge

Led by GPAD and POoR Collective, in collaboration with MRG Studio, Sutton Vane Associates, Cundall and MDA Consulting, Beyond the Bridge transforms the Falcon Road Rail Bridge underpass into a permanent civic landmark at the heart of Clapham Junction.

Commissioned by Wandsworth Council through the ‘Transforming Falcon Road Bridge’ open design competition, organised by the London Festival of Architecture, the scheme was selected from a competitive shortlist of six teams and delivered as part of Wandsworth’s London Borough of Culture 2025 programme, embedding collaboration, community voice and cultural identity at the core of its permanent transformation.

Built Project

Running beneath one of the UK’s busiest rail interchanges, the Falcon Road Rail Bridge underpass had long been perceived as dark, noisy and unwelcoming. The ‘Transforming Falcon Road Bridge’ open call competition invited architects, designers and artists to reimagine the space through a bold yet deliverable proposal, foregrounding safety, sustainability and local identity.

Following its selection, the design was developed through detailed technical coordination and an extensive programme of community engagement, including over 1,000 survey responses, walking tours and a community design review panel. This process ensured the final built scheme responded directly to lived experience and everyday use.

The completed intervention integrates responsive lighting to improve visibility and create a stronger sense of arrival, alongside acoustic treatments that mitigate railway noise. Durable material upgrades enhance long-term resilience, while micro-gardens and pollinator-friendly planting introduce biodiversity and soften the infrastructural character of the underpass. New seating supports pause and occupation, shifting the space from a thoroughfare to a recognisable civic gateway.

At its centre, the ‘Memories of Wandsworth’ wayfinding wall, co-designed with residents, embeds local stories and landmarks into the fabric of the bridge, reinforcing community pride within this permanent transformation.
