subSTRATUM, designed by Edgy Collective and LINDA, transforms Camden High Street from a space of transit into a temporary civic square designed for gathering, connection, and celebration. Delivered as the winning proposal of the ‘Square’ Camden High Street Design Competition, the project forms part of Camden Council’s year-long Cultural Programme and supports the area’s trial pedestrianisation.

Conceived as a test-and-learn public realm intervention, the installation explores how temporary improvements can inform a potential permanent redesign.

Built Project

subSTRATUM introduces a continuous, level surface across the site, improving accessibility and creating a safer, more legible public realm. Curving planters ripple through the square, gently slowing the pace of movement and encouraging moments of pause, interaction, and rest. A punk stud-inspired ground pattern radiates from the centre — a subtle tribute to Camden’s musical and cultural heritage.

Seating, crafted from locally sourced fallen London oak, retains its organic edges to express the passage of time and material provenance. Arranged to support both social gatherings and solitary use, the layout ensures wheelchair users can sit comfortably alongside others, reinforcing the project’s inclusive ethos.

The planting strategy prioritises resilience and biodiversity, incorporating recycled materials to enhance drainage and reduce water use. Illuminated buoy sculptures act as playful wayfinding markers, referencing Camden’s spirit of exploration while strengthening the identity of the square after dark.

Developed in response to public consultation and delivered through local collaboration, the project is supported by The Castlehaven Community Association, who lead outreach and planting stewardship, Fallen and Felled, who supplied and fabricated the timber seating, and Wilkinson & Rivera, who crafted the wooden hives.

Accompanied by a seasonal programme of events and an open call for community-led activities, subSTRATUM will remain in place until Autumn 2026. Throughout this period, data gathered from the pedestrianisation trial will help assess its impact, ensuring the installation not only activates the high street in the present, but meaningfully informs its long-term future.
