Commissioned through an open design competition launched in 2022, the winning scheme was selected for its distinctive approach to reviving the character of this important local centre, drawing on traditions of craft, signage and interactivity rooted in British high streets. The completed installation includes a co-designed mural, bright overhead banners and a bespoke illuminated gateway sign that mark arrival and enhance wayfinding into the area historically known as “Little Portugal.”
Developed through close collaboration with local businesses and residents, the project incorporates co-designed banners and shopfront-inspired typography that reflect Wilcox Road’s diverse retail and hospitality mix. Iconography and visual motifs were shaped through workshops and engagement, embedding community voices directly into the design.
By repurposing existing infrastructure to minimise clutter, improving legibility from Nine Elms Station and introducing a rotating mural programme by local artists, the intervention delivers a lasting and culturally expressive public realm transformation, reinforcing Wilcox Road’s role as a thriving neighbourhood high street.
