YoungMinds Garden is a space for the local community to foster connections and alleviate loneliness – a sentiment symbolically mirrored in a habitat wall which will attract its own community of insects and wildlife, making sure no visitor is alone.
Foundational to the garden design is Kelpcrete – a low-carbon material which uses minerals extracted from seaweed as a binding component for architectural and construction applications. SD Projects has designed and created a furniture collection cast from Kelpcrete for the community garden.
The use of Kelpcrete in the garden and outdoor furniture design begins an important conversation about sustainable materials and regenerative design in the horticulture, landscaping and architecture industries as well as in wider construction. Moreover, Kelpcrete not only is an environmentally sustainable alternative to concrete, it also has a revival economic and social impact on local communities which previously relied on fishing.
