LFA2026 kicked off with a special Murray Lecture titled 'Echoes' and delivered by Jayden Ali of JA projects. An exploration of the 2026 theme of 'Belonging', Ali unpacked the theme at the scale of the city, neighbourhood, high streets and projects, before sitting down with Shumi Bose for a conversation unpacking ideas shared further and inviting the audience into the discussion through a moment of Q&A.

2026 saw the creation of Macchiato - a temporary pocket park on New Goulston Street in the Petticoat Lane area, commissioned by Aldgate Connect BID as part a design competition. Designed by OUT Architecture, the intervention took its name and form from an everyday observation, the circular stain left by a coffee cup. This simple, accidental mark was translated into a shared circular seating and gathering space, positioned directly outside The Colombian Coffee Company, a social enterprise whose values of community and ethical trade run through the project. The design transformed an underused corner of the historic market area into a welcoming place to pause, meet, and linger. Circular seating brought warmth and character to the space, celebrating the market's multicultural heritage and its legacy of everyday social exchange. The piece remains in place post Festival.

LFA2026 closed with the inaugural Young Voices lecture - a new collaboration between YADA (Young Architects and Developers Alliance) and the London Festival of Architecture. The lecture, titled 'Lost in Translation' was delivered by Sam Elbahja of HTA Design, and created a new platform for emerging professionals to share ideas and be heard. Sam asked whether architects need a new language, one that allows younger practitioners to claim their place and break down barriers between the profession and the public and offered an invitation to rethink how architecture speaks, and who it speaks for.

Marking the close of the Festival, a new temporary greenhouse installation was installed in the heart of the Barbican, as a celebration of food growing, sustainability and community. Designed by Studio Folk with Raskl as part of a LFA design competition commissioned by Culture Mile BID, the Veggery was inspired by the relationship between domestic gardens and the Barbican’s iconic architecture and began hosting a series of events, workshops and a communal planting programme across the summer.

LFA2026 saw the return of the LEGO Challenge after more than 5 years, this time at The London Centre and led by a special partnership between LFA, the Good Homes Alliance and the Museum of Architecture. The family saw architects (and their enlisted young helpers aged 6-12) go head-to-head to construct the most innovative and imaginative project that reflects the theme of 'belonging in good homes and places'.

Joining forces formally for the first time, NLA's NextGen and IDEA's Committee came together to deliver a special interactive event around the soft and practical skills that can shape (non-linear) built environment careers and build confidence, direction and agency. The evening brought together emerging and established voices from across the built environment to share key skills that they have developed and used to shape their career – from public speaking and communication, to resilience and confidence, before creating space for those in the room to practice these skills directly.

2026 marked 75 years since the Festival of Britain, and what a way to celebrate than at the architectural testing ground of Chrisp Street with a full day of activities celebrating Chrisp Street's heritage, and East London's evolving identity. The day brought together artists, cultural organisations and local creatives from across East London for a series of workshops, performances, talks, walking tours and interactive activities that unpacked themes past, present and future.

Building on collaborations over the last few years, LFA2026 saw a special exhibition of film and material prototypes exploring low-carbon, bio-based construction research developed through a collaboration between the University of East London, Sugarcrete®, Kenyatta University and UN-Habitat in Kenya. Supported by the British Council, the exhibition was set against the backdrop of the University of East London summer show and continued in a further exhibition as part of the Pan African Biennale September 2026.

The middle of the Festival saw the closure of Thames Road  and Crossness Road for the first time, and filled with a day long series of family activities. Exploring the new neighbourhood taking shape in Barking, celebrating the creativity and heritage that already exists alongside the people, cultures and communities, the day unpacked what it means to belong to the area. From a shared long-table experience, live performances, films, workshops, and a chance to tour parts of the area that are usually off-limits, there was something for everyone!

Building on interventions in the area over the last two years, 2026 saw the arrival of a series of gateway wayfinding installations, commissioned by The Fitzrovia Partnership as part of an LFA design competition. The stacked cylindrical structures was designed by Adalberto Lonardi Studio and were positioned at key entry points to the neighbourhood to help visitors find their way to the area's hidden gems. Each totem drew on Fitzrovia's architectural heritage, using patterns and colours inspired by local landmarks, ironwork and decorative details found across the neighbourhood. The interventions remain throughout the summer period.

The London Centre - home to NLA and London's Built Environment Community - became an official ‘Festival hub’ for LFA2026 and a key gathering place to host briefings in the lead-up to and a variety of activities throughout the Festival. Each element truly invited organisers and attendees to unpack how the streets, spaces and institutions of the Square Mile can foster connection, creativity and belonging, and what more can be done to expand this for all who live, work and visit the area and wider city.  From exhibitions and performances, to talks and workshops, there was something for everyone.

TfL led a special guided tour of Canning Town Station as part of the 2026 Festival, exploring how it is being transformed from a busy interchange into a welcoming hub at the heart of the neighbourhood. Attendees had the chance to learn about plans to improve local connections, the role of community engagement especially with women and girls in shaping safer, more inclusive spaces and the design thinking behind improving the station for customers and staff, before finishing with a special behind‑the‑scenes look at the operations that keep thousands of journeys running smoothly every day.

Putting belonging into action, TFL invited Festival attendees to step into TfL’s new bus shelter designs for safer, more pleasant and accessible journeys. Through visual displays, material samples and QR codes, attendees to the exhibition understanding the design process and share their feedback with the design teams. The exhibition was situated in The London Centre, with many prototypes across the city.
